Barberino Val d'Elsa (FI)
The CHAPEL OF SAN MICHELE ARCANGELO was built between 1594 and 1597 by the architect Santi di Tito and is a perfect reproduction on a 1:8 scale of the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. It was commissioned by Giovan Battista di Neri Capponi, the owner of the renaissance Villa Petrognano and Canon of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
In order to build it he had to obtain permission from Grand Duke Ferdinand I due to an existing ban on building in that area and it was eventually built on the site where the castle of Semifonte, destroyed in 1202, once stood.
The Brunelleschi model was repeated not only in the octagonal plan, but also in the system of double calotte construction which are identical to Santa Maria del Fiore, the only change being from circular windows to rectangular.
This rare architectural gem is located on a typical Tuscan hill surrounded by vineyards, where you can enjoy a magical sunset.
